Will extreme change in climate and environment trigger an artist’s creative output? This winter 2010, the very first collaboration between Studiokura from Fukuoka, Japan and INSTINC from Singapore will be launched. One artist will be chosen to experience this clash of the extremes; a village life in Japan vs. city life in Singapore. Welcome to these two very different but interesting artist residencies! Call for submission is now open.
Profile of Studio Kura, Japan(www.studiokura.info)
Studio Kura is located in the city of Itoshima, a prefecture of Fukuoka. Set against a backdrop of mountains and rice fields in the countryside, the studio itself is housed in a former rice warehouse. Located on a compound amid traditional Japanese homes and gardens, the studio is ideal for artists looking for a peaceful place to make work and engage with Japanese culture.
By train and car, the studio is 40 minutes to Fukuoka, which is the main city in the Island of Kyushu. Artists will be supplied with their own apartment and studio. Available studio space is 20 meters square with newly furbished workshop and living space measuring at approximately 40m square. Food is provided.
Profile of INSTINC, Singapore(www.instinc.com)
Singapore is a unique, dynamic city rich in contrast and colour, you’ll find a harmonious blend of culture, cuisine, arts and architecture here. Brimming with energy, this little island in Southeast Asia embodies the best of both East and West.
INSTINC is located in the heart of the city, in Clarke quay and its intrinsic vision is committed in supporting all forms of contemporary art and fostering friendships and collaborations with other artists. There is an etching press that can print up to 60cm by 90cm here. Artists who have non-toxic printmaking background and an interest to work with the press, either on its own or combine with other media will be given priority in the selection process. We aim to offer artists an opportunity to work in a new surrounding in sunny island Singapore and to interact with local artists and to contemplate upon and develop their practice and be inspired. There is no pressure to deliver finished works, however, artist should make productive use of their time and pro-actively engage with other resident artists and the wider environment.
